Annual Meeting Goes Online

AoH Executive Letter:

Annual Meeting Goes Online December 3-5, 2020

Registration Fees to be Announced on September 14

August 19, 2020

Dear Colleagues in the Academy of Homiletics,

The AoH Executive has voted to hold an online Annual Meeting from December 3-5, 2020, and not in-person in Boston, due to health concerns in the Covid-19 context.  Many aspects of the meeting will remain the same, even as we will be meeting on Zoom.  We will be hearing our keynote speaker Dr. Shelly Rambo on “preaching and trauma,” discussing our papers in work groups, remembering colleagues who have passed in the last year, honoring retirees, worshiping together, and even holding our business meeting!  The 2020 Annual Meeting on Zoom will look and feel different, but it will still be our opportunity to gather—even if virtually in this time of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Because of the Executive’s fiduciary relationship with the Academy, we have had to proceed carefully over the last few weeks.  We are now pleased to announce that the Royal Sonesta Hotel will allow AoH to reschedule our 2020 contractual obligations for Boston to a 2021 meeting at a Royal Sonesta Hotel in Chicago—and with a cheaper room rate of $139!

In mid-September, we plan to announce the costs for the 2020 online meeting and open registration.  There are still other fiduciary issues for the Executive to work through between now and December.  Some of those details about planning for December will need to be announced after our September Exec meeting, once we have recalibrated our expenses and income for the balance of this year.  We are fortunate as an Academy that we remain in a solid financial position to work through any changes needed to pull off an online meeting.

What is even better is the opportunity that an online meeting presents for us in 2020.  The AoH Executive intends to broaden participation in our Annual Meeting by working closely with Societas Homiletica to encourage more international attendees on Zoom.  You can see our video invitation and an interactive bibliography on preaching and trauma to help you take a more active part.

We on the Executive intend to plan in such a way that we don’t just replicate an in-person meeting, but take full advantage of online media to make our events more participatory.  The details of our day-to-day schedule, any modified costs, and revised formats will come shortly.  But please know that we are on task and looking out for you in a time of pandemic, economic dislocation, and racial reckoning in North America.  More details will follow next month, but we are committed to making an online meeting workable and helpful for you all December 3-5, 2020.  We’ll see you online!
